Matt’s Lower League Accumulator And Singles Saturday 16th March
The end of the season is drawing ever closer with teams fighting for their lives as well as pushing for promotion.
So I’m looking to make the most of these final few months! Here is my top treble from League’s One and Two:
Bristol Rovers vs Rochdale
A once seemingly doomed Bristol Rovers are now the form team in League Two and are just so difficult to beat at The Memorial Stadium. They head into this fixture having won 3 of their last 5 games and all of these victories were against teams in the top 7 in the league.
In their last 5 home games they have been beaten just once winning their last 3 games in a row and 65.22% of their points this season have been collected on home soil. They seem to have gathered momentum which has seen them run clear of the drop zone and I’ve always been of the belief that Rovers are too good for their league position.
Rochdale travel to Bristol today having not won in their last 6 away games and having won just 1 of their last 5 overall. A relegation fight is not yet ruled out for The Dale who sit only 7 points from safety with 9 games still to play. They will face a difficult task today at a ground where they haven’t won since 2005 and with Rovers in such great form they will need to step up a few gears to even come close to a result today.
The exceptional home form of Bristol Rovers recently and the fact that they continue to progress up the league with each game leads me to believe they could well achieve better than a mid-table finish this season and that’s what makes this my bet of the weekend at attractive odds.

Doncaster Rovers vs Portsmouth
Betting on Doncaster to win this game may seem obvious, but why make life difficult for yourself? Donny are top of the league and 3 points clear of their nearest rivals Sheffield United albeit having played 1 game more.
Today they continue to put pressure on those below them with what on paper seems an easy home victory. They’ve had a tough run in recently with fixtures away at MK Dons and Bournemouth as well as facing an in form Yeovil team in their last 5 games. In their last home game they proved their ability to see off lesser opposition with a 3-0 mauling of Hartlepool and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a similar score line today.
Pompey seemed to have a mini revival a few weeks ago with 2 wins on the bounce against Crewe Alexandra and Bury but that was put to bed by Leyton Orient in the week and should see them fall back into the kind of form we’re used to i.e. the form where they lose week in week out.
The two teams met towards the end of last season when both were in the Championship and Pompey walked away from the Keepmoat Stadium with a 3-4 victory. Since then however fortunes have changed dramatically and Pompey’s slide down the leagues seems set to only continue. The -1 handicap for Doncaster seems an attractive price at 6/4 for those value seekers, but for part of the treble I’m going with a straight Doncaster win.

Leyton Orient vs Carlisle
Don’t rule out Leyton Orient to make a push for the playoff places just yet. They proved earlier in the season that they are perfectly capable of putting a run together and that’s exactly what they seem to be doing again here with impeccable timing.
Orient are undefeated in their last 5 games and face off against Carlisle today having won 2 games in a row. With only 2 defeats in their last 11 home league games, they will be looking to make the most of their fixtures at The Matchroom in order to secure a play-off spot; which is not yet out of their reach.
Carlisle may well be full of confidence after a 2-0 victory against Brentford midweek but their away form leaves a lot to be desired. Only 1 win in their last 5 games on the road. They’ve only picked up 5 wins away from home this season and look unlikely to make any impact today.
Currently 9 points clear of the relegation zone, Carlisle don’t look as though they will be dragged into a relegation battle and they will probably settle for mid table obscurity.
The last meeting between the two at Warwick Park saw Orient hand out a 1-4 thrashing when they were in the middle of a great run of form. After a small lull in this form over the first few months of 2013, they seem to be regaining momentum and I wouldn’t rule out a similar result.
