Big-field handicaps are a punting minefield at Goodwood, and on day four of the Glorious meeting on Friday the Betfred Mile is littered with mines. Still, it’s hard to resist the allure of these races – the sense of achievement you feel when backing the winner of such a contest is pretty intoxicating.

And what a cracking renewal of this valuable handicap; you can genuinely make a credible case for each of the 20 contenders. That said, there is no doubt in my mind that potentially the best-handicapped horse in the race is Stirring Ballad who has had absolutely no luck in running in her last three starts.

GLORIOUS GOODWOOD DAY 3 TIPS – VISION CAN SHOW HIS TRUE COLOURS IN THE GOODWOOD CUP

The third day of Glorious Goodwood will struggle to conjure up the anticipation and then excitement of Wednesday’s Sussex Stakes in which Toronado produced a potent turn of foot to exact revenge on his Royal Ascot conqueror, Dawn Approach.

Conversely, there are some ultra-competitive and high quality races for punters to sink their teeth into, not least the Artemis Goodwood Cup, for which 14 have stood their ground, including last year’s winner Saddler’s Rock.

GLORIOUS GOODWOOD DAY 2 TIPS – DAWN APPROACH CAN THWART TORONADO AGAIN IN SUSSEX STAKES CLASH

Day two of Glorious Goodwood will be glorious regardless of the weather, as come rain or shine racegoers will be in their element, particularly at around 3.05 when DAWN APPROACH and Toronado go head-to-head in the Qipco Sussex Stakes.

Despite both blotting their copybooks somewhat prior to Royal Ascot, that duo proved without question that they are top milers in the St James’s Palace Stakes, fighting out a thrilling finish with Dawn Approach prevailing by the narrowest of margins.

GLORIOUS GOODWOOD DAY 1 TIPS – ANGEL GABRIAL CAN SPREAD HIS WINGS

On Tuesday racing folk – and the odd person wearing Gucci loafers with no socks – will descend on the scenic pastures of Sussex that are Goodwood. It’s a quintessentially English affair: Earl Grey will be consumed in the mornings; Lanson Vintage will be enjoyed on the pretty lawns throughout the afternoon; and Pimms will be served, along with smoked eels on rye bread, in the Richmond Enclosure. It is, of course, Glorious Goodwood.
